Voodoo.joe Dang, who knew it could get any fucking better. Outstanding….

The track Lost Banjo takes you on a journey. The journey starts in the Americana fields of bluegrass and ends in a distant land, reminiscent of a global village at the cross roads of Eastern Europe and the Middle East.
And then Barflies and Babies I could listen to that all day…. And some days I do just that.

about

With the exception of "Hear that Train", these songs have all been previously released on past albums. They are presented here together for the first time.

In my teens I played guitar in a punk band. In my early twenties, I was listening to alternative metal and noise, and trying to find my own way of creating new sounds with my guitar. I was chasing something that I couldn’t quite define, but it definitely captured my angst. I played guitar ALL the time.

I didn’t start playing banjo until I was thirty, when I got a banjo for my birthday. I had been around bluegrass for my whole life. My grandfather Clyde played banjo, and when I was young, he would host huge bluegrass parties at his house in Maryland, just north of Baltimore. Mandolins, fiddles, bass , guitar and banjo would float out over the summer nights, and I was one of the grandkids flipping and diving into the backyard pool practically the whole time while the music filled the air. My grandfather playing banjo with his friends. The grill smoking. Sometimes a bushel of crabs. Peace. Paradise.

When I got my first banjo, it was a culimination of a journey of sorts. I had moved out West in my mid 20’s, and a series of weird events led to a cassette being put into my hands: a Folkways cassette of Bill Monroe and Doc Watson. I was driving around Colorado listening to music that took me back to my grandfather's parties…old songs I didn’t know I knew ..songs that made me homesick…made me fall in love with bluegrass. I began calling my grandfather on the phone and talking about those old songs, and banjo, dobros….he was thrilled that I had found my way to that music.

My grandfather Clyde played three-finger Scruggs style, like most traditional bluegrass players. He once told me that I should never even mess around with clawhammer style. He came from a different world….. But, this is not bluegrass. Im not even sure what I would call a lot of these tunes? Alternate Americana? Punk-twang? Banjo Blues? Drop-thumb noise? Considering his traditional bluegrass attitude, I don’t know that my grandfather would like most of these songs, but he would be proud that I play his banjo with such love.

I gathered these songs together to reflect upon and honor my grandfather- he opened a world for me, and I am forever grateful.

thank you for being here.

olds
